Examples of underground psychoactive preparations—drug combinations In this disclosure we provide, from one public archive, examples of the broad range of underground drug preparations, highlighting those that contain either MDMA, DMT, or LSD and at least one other pharmacologically active ingredient. These combinations can be created for a number of reasons. One reason is to optimize desired or beneficial effects of one or more drugs, whether recreational or therapeutic. Another reason is to decrease unwanted effects of one or more drugs (e.g., to limit or reduce certain side effects or adverse effects of taking one of the drugs alone). Another reason is to provide the particular synergistic effects of the combination, in a convenient single unit dosage form. For many drug combinations, a synergy or multiple synergies will be known to users, and therefore combining the drugs together in a single composition or formulation will allow users to administer a single preparation having those effects. Preparing the drugs together in specific dose amounts also ensures relatively consistent and known dosing, especially within the same batch. Finally, drug combinations may be designed to “imitate” another drug pharmacologically, as discussed more below. The appearance of such drug preparations with multiple active ingredients is not unexpected. After all, polypharmacy is common among underground users. For example, using cannabis with psychedelics is especially common, to the point that many users forget to mention their cannabis use when describing drug experiences. Psychedelics (aka hallucinogens) are often combined with the empathogen (or “entactogen”) MDMA or with anxiolytics (such as benzodiazepines or “benzos”) or with NMDA antagonists (such as ketamine). Certain popular combinations of psychedelics with MDMA are well documented and include "candy flips" (LSD with MDMA) and "hippie flips" (psilocybin with MDMA). Some examples of other combinations can be found in Chary, Yi, & Manini (2018, Candyflipping and Other combinations: identifying drug–drug combinations from an online forum. Frontiers in psychiatry, 9, 135), in the extensive Experience Vaults of the encyclopedic drug information website erowid.org, in the forums of www.bluelight.org, and on the many other websites dedicated to illicit psychoactive substances, such as psychonautwiki.org, www.psychonaut.fr, and www.dmt-nexus.me, as well as numerous subreddits on the website reddit.com, such as r/Drugs. In recent years, a number of combinations have attempted to produce MDMA-like experiences. For example, the "Borax combo" or "pink stars" or "Polly" imitates MDMA by combining a serotonin releaser (such as MDAI (5,6-methylenedioxy-2-aminoindane) or 5-MAPB (1-(Benzofuran-5-yl)-N-methylpropan-2-amine) with a psychostimulant (such as 2-fluoromethamphetamine or 2-fluoromethylphenidate), and, optionally, a small amount of a 5-HT2AR agonist (such as 4-OH-N-Methyl-N-ethyl-tryptamine, 4-OH-N-Methyl-N-isopropyl-tryptamine, or 5-Methoxy-N-Methyl-N-isopropyl-tryptamine). The traditional brew ayahuasca presents a well known example of using a combination of ingredients to improve bioavailability of psychedelic tryptamines. Modern variants that employ industrially produced MAO inhibitors to increase bioavailability are also well documented and are sometimes called pharmahuasca or ayahuasca borealis. Altering stomach or gut pH is also commonly used to improve absorption of monoamine drugs and is frequently discussed by drug users (e.g., with a citrus juice such as lemon juice or orange juice). The information that follows was originally published on the website drugsdata.org, which is a drugs testing service. Thus, it is not exhaustive, but is still a helpful sampling of underground innovation. DrugsData (formerly 'EcstasyData') is a project of Erowid Center that was started in July 2001 to document and publish drug sample contents through laboratory analysis. DrugsData.org is owned and operated by Erowid. Disclosure here is intended as a public service and not an assertion of copyright or ownership. Because presenting the complete contents of Drugsdata.org results has proven impractical (due to the large file size), we highlight three subsets of data: MDMA with other drugs (46 pages of results); LSD with other drugs (6 pages of results); and DMT with other drugs (1 page of results). These three categories of combination are presented in separate results tables for the reader's convenience. For other substances, the reader is referred to DrugsData.org.
