Abstract

Determination of Aircraft position using LiFi This disclosure relates to the calculation of aircraft position and inclination using LiFi or VLC data in combination with a 3 axis resection based on airport lighting systems. This also relates to landing approach / assist systems and airport navigation systems. LiFi and Visual Light Communication (VLC) are an existing means of communicating using visual light in free space communication. Many concepts of this including integrating this into existing room lighting and the modulation proposed in the upcoming standard IEEE 802.15.7 (note: this was published in 2018) is aimed at allowing a dimmable and anti-flicker light while achieving communication. Throughout this document the term VLC will be used as the more generalised term, although it does not necessarily depend on any particular standard or protocol. Several aircraft locations technologies exist including: ● Instrument Landing System – uses Radio Frequency (RF) signals to detect if an aircraft is above or below a glide slope and if the aircraft is left or right of the runway centre line. ● Multiple visual landing aids – using a series of coloured lights to detect the current glide slope of the aircraft com...
