Summary The present paper examines whether it is possible to synthesize polyester polyols using biobased 3-methylphthalic anhydride or biobased 3-methylphthalic 20 acid (3-MPA) and classic glycols. These polyester polyols can be later used as precursors with isocyanates in the synthesis of polyurethanes. Synthesis of polyester polyols with fossil based phthalic anhydride (PA) is abundantly present in literature, for example in Chinese patent CN110698659 or European patent EP1237975, and these protocols were used as base reference to create the 25 tested protocol. The present paper further examines bio-MPA as performance booster for alkyd coatings. Unsaturated Polyester polyols synthesis 30 2. Introduction Relement has developed a partly bio-based alternative for PA called bio- MPA or 3-MPA, short for 3-methylphthalic anhydride, consisting of 56% renewable carbon measured by 14C. Bio-MPA will become fully bio-based as 2 soon as the second of its two principal raw materials becomes available as bio- based. Polyurethanes (PU) are extensively utilized in the coatings industry due to the...
