Abstract

1 Synthesis of Triethanolamine (TEA) Stearic/Oleic Methosulphate Esterquats and their applications Key Words TEA Stearic/Oleic Methosulphate Esterquat, Plant-based, Home Care, Fabric Conditioners, Fabric Softeners, Softness Executive Summary Triethanolamine (TEA) Stearic/oleic Methosulphate Esterquat is a new plant-based ingredient developed by Croda, Inc. The synthesis method, properties of the quat and its application for home care formulations is disclosed within. Background Triethanolamine (TEA) Stearic/oleic Methosulphate Esterquat is synthesized using fatty acids stearic & oleic acid mixture as the reactants. These raw materials are plant-based. Different stearic to oleic acid ratios, 50:50, 60:40, 70:30 & 80:20, underwent esterification reaction with triethanolamine followed by quaternization with dimethyl sulphate. The reaction scheme is illustrated in diagram 1. Diagram 1 HO N OH OH O N OH O R2 O O R1 R1 O OH R2 OH OH 170-175Deg.
